I mostly drive in freeway traffic while commuting. I consider myself a good driver, by that I mean I slowly and gently apply my brakes early enough so I dont need to slam them and drive at speed limit or a little higher. The dealer is asking $480 for all four, but I want to wait until I can pay cash, rather than charging them on a credit card.

I would consider replacing them in the next week or two, and the $480. is a crazy price for a 4 wheel brake job as long as all the rotors or brake drums don't need replaced just turned, I would check with someplace else to do the brake job if you can't do it yourself, I have seen full brake jobs advertised for $180. for all 4 wheels.

In my opinion, you have gone to far already with these brake pads. Change them now before you need to make a panic stop(we all do from time to time) and find nothing left in the brakes.

If you wait to long that $480 estimate will only get larger when you need rotors as well.

Remember good drivers need good brakes.
Best of luck to you.

Not long. Can you do them yourself? If not then get them done before you start cutting into the rotor. Then you will have to replace the rotors and the price just gets higher.

Do you have a friend that can do them on a Saturday morning?

Better get them replaced pretty quick. And at $480.00 for putting shoes on? Or is that just the pads and no labor? Find a new mechanic and parts store for better prices!
