I sometimes experience the simular problem with external hard drives. Usually it seems it's because I still have a window with the drive contents open. This might be like shutting down your hard drive with opened files on it. It can corrupt the files (at least that's what could happen back in the days of 8088, 286, and 386 processors.)

Ever notice when you had to shut down your system when it froze up on you, Windows would restart with a message that it had to check the system for potential errors because of a non-orderly shut-down? It's probably open files it's searching for and trying to fix. I guess you could think of it as leaving a filing cabinet open in a hurricane. Maybe something got in there or maybe something got out.

This might be why the system doesn't want you to disconnect yet. Someone thinks it's important to avoid data corruption. Maybe a lot of modern devices are immune and the system hasn't been "tweaked" to understand it's dealing with an immune device and not a hard drive.

So, I would shut down any windows and then see if the system says it's okay to remove the device. Then I might go to Task Manager and start looking for processes that might be running which utilize your device.

well the thing is.when it says cannot stop the generic device.it usually because you are running a program or file from the device.in ur case.maybe you are viewing the pics not from your computer.but from your camera.so when you dont close the application that you are running from your camera or any USB devices, the computer wont let you unplugg your USB.because you might lost the file that you opened.try to close all application before unplugging your USB devices.

Doesn't matter...I never click that stupid thing anyway and just un-plug any USB out when I'm ready to. Who does Windows think it is asking me to let it know what I want to do?

The only problem you might experience when doing this is that when you want to plug your camera back in it may or may not work. No big deal, re-start the comoputer and your back up and running.

Don't stress it, it's all good.

If you open any files directly from the camera or are working on any files from the camera on your comp, try closing down the applications first and then click remove hardware button on your task bar. I usually just yank my camera out.

You should list the model of the digital camera that you are using. Also, you should contact the manufacturer of the camera for help, before coming here.

My guess would be that you are doing something wrong, considering you gave it up that you know next to nothing about computers (you called the tower/chasis a "hard drive").

My advice: Stop using computers.

Don't worry about it, usb's are buffered to protect both the peripheral device and the computer. so long as you can transfer files and data, just unplug as and when your happy the files are transferred. Really, usb is foolproof.
