I am attending a conference in Cannes in April. I would like to experience the atmosphere of the south of France but don't want to be too far from the conference. Is it best to stay in Cannes or in one of the outside towns ?

My opinion is that if you have business in Cannes you are better off staying in the city, which is, after all, a major tourist destination to begin with. Cannes, in its way, is the epitome of a certain south of France life style, that of the international jet set, the rich and the famous.

If you wish to sample the simpler life in the south of France then you should consider taking some time and getting rather far away from the cities of the riviera into the hinterland with is little villages and slower pace of life.

Mougins or St Paul de Vence, but taxis are not cheap. The ultra-rich stay at the Eden Roc in Cap d'Antibes.

Are you going to MIP-TV? Most people stay in Cannes because of transport. I once stayed in Juan les Pins but had trouble getting into Cannes because I couldn't get a taxi and it's too far to walk.

As accommodation goes, I find Cannes to be totally soul-less; ditto Cannes la Bocca, although there is a regular courtesy shuttle bus to the Palais from the hotel/resort there.

SAINT CEZAIRE SUR SIAGNE! it's a small village near Grasse, in the moutains not very far from Cannes. You'll find the real atmosphere of the south of France in the small villages on top of the hills. Cabris is also very nice. If you want to stay in a bigger town, saint paul de vence is very nice too, it is famous for its art and painting shops.
