On most maps that body of water is refered to as the Sea of Japan. Primarily because that body of water separates the Japanese Archipelago from the Korean Peninsula and the Russian eastern boundary. If the Japanese Islands were not there then the Pacific Ocean would touch the Korean Peninsula. The Koreans believe that no body of water should bear the name of only one country, however they forget that the strait separating the southern Japanese islands from the Korean Peninsula is known on most maps as the Korean Straight. The Koreans believe that the Sea of Japan should be called the East Sea because the Korean name for this sea when translated means East Sea.

Good idea, but it is not in the interest of either countries - especially Japan. Do you really think Japan is responsible enough to actually feel the need to apologize to Koreans?

Plenty of bodies of water are named after only one country.
Indian Ocean, English Channel, Irish sea, Gulf of Mexico to name only four.
Is is the name of the body of water, it doesn't describe who owns that area of the Earth.
