I firmly believe that both liberals and conservatives want to succeed in Iraq, being that we ARE there already.

As a conservative I have a concept of what success means that is probably different than what a liberal would feel on this.

I have grave concerns about the manner in which this war has been conducted post invasion.

I do not pretend to understand all the dynamics of the chain of command or of political influences that have resulted in things being the way they are.

I do not think that America will ever, short of another terrorist attack here that is FAR worse than 9/11, get behind the war effort again.

There is a way to see this through to the end. I just keep hoping that we don't keep underestimating what the job will require in both numbers of boots on the ground and even more importantly, the political will to do what is necessary to truly do the things necessary to overwhelm and subject the will of the islamic terrorist.

It is a nasty situation, and as a conservative, I continue to support the President of the United States. History will judge him, not the present.

Yes, of course.
Unfortunately, Bush forewarned the terrorists the the Surge was coming, giving them the opportunity to leave town until things settle down. They'll be back.
The only chance the surge had of working was a surprise door- to-door search starting at the outskirts of Bagdhad's Sunni areas, so terrorists couldn't escape, working their way toward the middle, killing all suspected militants and risking some major heat for inadvertently killing some noncombatants. It's not like the insurgents wear uniforms. They don't. Putting them in jail means they'll be free again to commit terrorist acts, which isn't my definition of a win. Winning this means killing some innocent ppl, though not deliberately, and I don't think the Repubs have the stomach for it.

We must be realistic.

Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, who advised Bush on the Iraq war, said military victory is no longer possible and joined calls for the U.S. government to seek help from Iraq's regional neighbors_ including Iran.

"If you mean, by 'military victory,' an Iraqi government that can be established and whose writ runs across the whole country, that gets the civil war under control and sectarian violence under control in a time period that the political processes of the democracies will support, I don't believe that is possible," he said on the BBC's Sunday AM program.

I'm sure the 12 trillion dollar check --to be equally distributed amongst the citizenry is in the mail.
Succeeding? You better off believing that Superman is about to start his circumvention of the planet in opposite rotation to bring us back to Sept. 10th, 2001.

Just keep voting Dems into office and you won't have to worry about overcoming the failures of Republican Governance.

Terror is a "strategy" not a physical foe--sure there are terrorist's out there, but you can't just lump the patriotic members of an occupied nation into an all encompassing category and say your fighting a nation of terrorists. That's insane!! Your wanna fight terrorism? It's done through intelligence and boots on the ground espionage.

Darn straight I want my country to succeed. I served in US military 9 years. Lots of blood sweat and tears were shed to obtain the results of 37 lives saved personally and crew on 278 other saves by US Coast Guard.

I do! It will take the present 5th column of the terrorist (our press) to change tactics. The press will have to challenge the Iraqi people to live up to what T.E. Lawrence felt they could be. At the end of the movie Lawrence of Arabia, he was disillusioned by them, b/c they chose to be tribal & not work together for the benefit of them all.

Will the western press show leadership or create drama for their own self enrichment?

succeed at what? I'm still trying to ascertain what Bush wants to be successful at. He's already unearthed future jihadists and militiamen. They're not going anywhere. So. can you edit and tell me what he is going to be successful at?
And PLEASE don't give me that tired "bringing peace and democracy to the Iraqi people" because that is about the most rhetorical, tired, ridiculous, absurd piece of nonsense I have ever heard.
