I have 98 Corolla, Power steering oil is getting decreased (not so fast, like half of the container in 6 months), what are the possible reasons for such a problem? Is this dangerous? and fixing is expensive? Thanks

You have a leak somewhere in the system. Keep topping it up but as it is steering realted and therefore connect with safety get it looked at immediately.

It could have leaking seals of the rack & pinion steering tube. It's cheaper to buy them at a parts store new, not rebuilt, too. The way the hoses have to run sometimes causes wear places to leaks, so they should be checked, also. And the pump can leak, too. A good mechanic should check all that stuff. If you don't fix it, it could stop working, costing a tow bill, or a wreck.

i own a repair shop, and to me it sounds like you may have a small leak in a line or the rack and pinion unit may be leaking just a little on it,it will leak down some normally once in a while but usually not this much,id look under it and see if there's anything that seems to have a mist of this stuff on it,even a line going bad will leak this much, you may actually have to take it and have it put up on a grease rack, and look under neath of it to actually find it,i have had to do this a few times before, good luck i hope this helps.

might be a leaking low pressure side, but my bet is a leak in the rack its self. I don't know enough about power steering, but a bad seal would give that slow a leak, a leaking line would probably leak faster.

sounds like a power steering low pressure line is leaking, is about $50 to fix yourself and a shop will be about $100..
