My parents have a high efficiency washer, too.

With my first child, I used Dreft on everything. Dreft also makes a liquid form (which is required in my mom's washer), and apparently you can use it in smaller amounts (it should say on the box or on the washer how much, I can't remember where we figured it out but it was one of those places).

However, Dreft isn't all it's cracked up to be. It worked fine for my daughter, because she didn't have any skin problems. I didn't know at the time that Dreft is loaded with chemicals and perfumes (hence the lovely baby powder scent). When I started out using Dreft for my second child, he broke out in a rash all over at around three months old. That's how I found out that he had eczema (which typically surfaces around 3 months of age). My pediatrician took one look at him and the first thing she said was, "are you using Dreft?" I couldn't believe she could tell that just by looking at him. She said that Dreft is no better for babies than any other detergent and to switch immediately to something that had "free" or "clear" in the name, such as All Free, Cheer Free, or Arm & Hammer Free. We switched to A&H Free, and my son's rash cleared up right away. It is cheaper than Dreft, and now I just wash everyone's clothes with it. The other thing that I always do with baby clothes is to give them an extra rinse cycle, just to make sure all the soap is out. And I don't use dryer sheets, although if your baby doesn't have any skin problems you probably could use liquid fabric softener.

I'm pretty sure that most liquid detergents can now be used in high efficiency washers in smaller amounts. I seem to recall it was about half the amount of a regular washer. Check the manual for the washer if your mom still has it, or the packaging on any perfume & dye free detergent. There are a lot of them out there, so I'm sure there's something you can use. Good luck!

As far as I can tell there is no such thing as a High efficiency detergent. I would recommend Dreft. Formulated for babies sensitive skin. You both can use it. I'm mom to 3.

ALL free clear is pretty good stuff. I have started using it on everything I wash. I miss the smell of my old detergent but it all gets cleaned the same just without the harsh chemicals.

Use dreft. But I was just wondering, why is your mom washing YOUR baby's cloths? Are you not capable of twisting the knob?

My husband has sensitive skin and we have to use Tide or All for him and I always use that for the baby's clothes too.
