hot water can fade and shrink clothing. As well as ahigh heat in the dryer. I always was most clothing in cold water and put on med heat or perm. press to dry.

If you have a garment that is bright or dark in color, and you would like it to stay that color, first soak the item in cold salt water before washing. This will allow the color to hold better. You only need to do this before the FIRST wash.

Second, the wash cycle doesn't shrink clothes nearly as much as the dryer does. Yes, hot water will compress the fibers, however, it's the dry cycle that permanently reduces size of clothing.
Same goes for a stain...if you have washed an item, and then realized it has a stain in it, DON'T DRY IT. This will set the stain permanently. Pre-treat with an appropriate stain remover, wash again, and then dry.

It depends on what they are made out of. 100% cotton will shrink in hot water. Just to be safe use cold.
