Up until 1995, apart from parades in the major towns and cities, St. Patrick's day in Ireland was relatively quiet. Since then we have turned it into a 'St. Patrick's Festival' held in Dublin and this year will take place over five days and nights, from March 15th to 19th.
There will be parades, music, street theatre, family carnivals, comedy, street performances, dance, a treasure hunt, night spectacles, fireworks etc.
Dublin is the place to be if you want to celebrate St.Patrick's day in style with over a million other Irish people. You can see the whole list of events at the site below.

Thay is not true. Our Irish cousins celebrate St. Patrick's Day, but Americans celebrate it with more...shall we say...enthusiasm.

I was fortunate enough to be in Ireland right before St. Patty's Day. It's a bigger celebration here because of many early Irish immigrants being homesick. and now its more traditon. They celebrate it in Ireland, but its no where near as big of a deal. definately no coloring rivers green. but you can be sure there's plenty of guinness! yum!

In Australia, some people celebrate it - I just think it's an excuse to drink green beer and get drunk! It's not an offical public holiday here though.

Wrong, St. Patric brought Christianity to Ireland and they have a pilgrimage every year in his name. He also supposedly prayed for 40 days and nights to get rid of all the snakes and they dropped dead the next day....
