Pet shops (like the ones inthe mall) are terrible things to support. Please, do not buy a cat there. Remember, places like Petsmart and Petco aren't really pet shops - the only cats & dogs they exhibit are rescue animals.
If you are having problems finding cats, please visit http://www.petfinder.com . They usually have a ton of them and kitten season is coming up, so even more will be flooding the rescue groups.
Good luck to you in your search.

Don't go to a pet store to get a pet. Their pets aren't always healthy.
If you want a purebred (not my preference) and want to pay a lot of money go to a Cat magazine and look at the ads.
Otherwise, you can go to newspaper ads---or you can go to the Humane Shelter.
My recommendation would be to go to a Vet and see if they have any strays or discarded cats or kittens. A lot of vets offer adoptions, and then you know they are healthy. That's how I got my cat.
Some shelters have pets online too. Petfinder is a good source--pics & all. URL below.
Sometimes people will put kittens in a basket & sit outside stores to give them away. There are too many kittens, and not enough owners who care for them all their lives. If you get a cat, have it fixed (spayed or neutered) before it is 6 months old so as not to add to the problem. Spayed & neutered cats are healthier & less likely to run away also.
Good luck & enjoy your kitty.

We have two cats and we got them both from the vets. They would know of lots of people whose animals are pregnant or have unwanted kittens ,cats or dogs.Classified adds in your local paper is another place to look.Or,why not put a wanted to buy a pet add of your own in the window of the local general store? Unless you live on an island there should be lots of animals about. There are everywhere I have ever gone or lived.Lots of luck.

check your local newspaper.. the lady i purchased my cat from that put an ad in the paper that said she was selling them for a very high price and when i went to pick him out she didn't want any money she only put a dollar amount so that the people who want to feed the kittens to their other animals (snakes) would not come to get a free kitten

Please please please...go to the local animal shelter and adopt a cat. It really really is a wonderful thing to do. I have saved 3 cats in the past and they are the most loving animals I have ever seen.
and everytime I look at them, I realize I helped save a life and gave a deserving kitty a good home.
The other places you are talking about normally get their "stock" from puppy and kitten mills. If you patronize them, you are only "feeding the machine".
Please consider this before making a move.

you might try your local newspaper, in the classified ads section. some papers have a pets section. You might also ask the pet stores if they sell them. (Some places only sell them certain times of year). And then give them your number and ask them to call as soon as they get some in. Some times they sell pretty fast.

Try your local animel shelter-there are many cats in need of homes at the shelters. They usually charge a small fee and require that the cats be spay/neutered. You could also try the freebie section of your newspaper-they usually list cats in need of homes.
