What is up with all of the avatars with red noses? It's not Christmas so what's the reason for it?

It's red nose day in the UK... a day where they all give to charities to help underveloping countries. The significance of the red nose... this American has no idea, but I sure support their charitable efforts. As Americans, of course, we don't have to do a thing. We have Angelina Jolie working it for us.
