It varies for each individual. There is not just one reason and sometimes there are multiple reasons. Whatever the case it is always a tragedy to watch someone self destruct from the choice to use drugs and become dependent on them.

Curiosity and lack of proper education on drugs.
If you tell a kid that pot is the same as crack and they see their friends smoking pot and they don't die and get addicted to it, then they will think that you lied about crack too.
But if you teach your kids the real truth about drugs they will be less curious to try them. If you yourself understand the difference between pot, crack, heroin, cocaine, Ecstasy, LSD, mushroom, special K, meth, inhalants, and legal drugs and you give that information to your children they will be less susceptible to peer pressure and the curiosity. And more able to make informed decisions when the time comes.
