No, she means "Freedom Writers" They named themselves sort of after the Freedom Riders, but instead of riding a bus, they took their message out by writing about their lives.
Movie is great and book even greater.
It is called "The Freedom Writers' Diary : How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them by Freedom Writers and Zlata Filipovic (Paperback - Oct 12, 1999). Not too expensive, even available used.

Also available: "Teach with Your Heart: Lessons I Learned from the Freedom Writers" (Hardcover)
by Erin Gruwell (Author)

“Erin is a true inspiration and an example of the extraordinary difference one person can make in the world. She continues to transform the lives of students across the country through her work and The Freedom Writers Foundation.”
