It depends of the meaning of the word "Server", the idea behind servers and clients is the basis of networking, but you don't neccesarily need to buy expensive server software to run a server/client configuration.

You need to connect the two computers physically, directly through a crossover cable, or through a switch/hub/router using patch cables.

After the physicall installation, then you need to map the drives, and setup permissions to access files on both computers, you can read this short illustrated guide from microsoft:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/default.mspx

There are other services that you can take advantage of using server software, but the price is really high, unless you take some time to learn Linux, which you can configure as a server, and you can get it as free software on a book for less than $60, really powerful.

Get server software & install it on one. Create your domain & point the other pc towards the server for saving via virtual drive access.

Use a peer to peer network that way each computer becomes the others server.

easiest way is to map a drive on the intended server and save alll your files to it while working on the other machine. you'll also go to that mapped drive to open the files to work on them.
