My sister in law is really confused. Her period stopped coming, then she went to get urine pregnancy test she bought from Longs, she got Positive 3 times. Then she went to Nurse's office and got back a Negative... Then she got her period .....

I'm confused, I thought false positives are nearly impossible, and getting 3 probably means she's pregnant... but she got her period... she's really disappointed... is there a chance she's still pregnant? I heard some people are pregnant but they still have period once and then they stop getting period after that... any clues?

Probable miscarriage.

Miscarriages often occur early in pregnancy, before the woman even knows she's pregnant, so this would not be unusual.

Just tell your sister to watch for unusual signs, such as increasing pelvic pain, fever, interminable bleeding, or an odorous discharge. These may be due to having an incomplete miscarraige, which would mean that she still has retained products of conception in her uterus.

Most likely, her body will be ready to try again in a month or two.

Sounds to me like it could have been a chemical pregnancy...A chemical pregnancy is the term given to a pregnancy that ends very early in the first trimester. Chemical pregnancies are confirmed by testing for hCG, the hormones that indicate the presence of a pregnancy. These hormones are typically detected by a urine or blood pregnancy test. However, within weeks, these hCG levels begin to drop rapidly, signifying an end to the pregnancy. As a result, your baby and his amniotic sac cannot be seen on an ultrasound and a miscarriage takes place.

It is believed that chemical pregnancies occur when the fetus dies immediately after conception. This happens before the embryo has a chance to implant in your uterus where it can grow and develop. Like a stillbirth or molar pregnancy, chemical pregnancies can be very upsetting for the couple involved.

or it could very well be a blighted ovum pregnancy...A blighted ovum (also known as “anembryonic pregnancy”) happens when a fertilized egg attaches itself to the uterine wall, but the embryo does not develop. Cells develop to form the pregnancy sac, but not the embryo itself. A blighted ovum usually occurs within the first trimester before a woman knows she is pregnant. A high level of chromosome abnormalities usually causes a woman’s body to naturally miscarry.
A blighted ovum can occur very early in pregnancy, before most women even know that they are pregnant. You may experience signs of pregnancy such as a missed or late menstrual period and even a positive pregnancy test. It is possible that you may have minor abdominal cramps, minor vaginal spotting or bleeding. As with a normal period, your body may flush the uterine lining, but your period may be a little heavier than usual.
Thats the only possible thing i could think of..chances are if she had 3 positive tests they werent all false negatives and she was pregnant but unfortunately ended too soon.

False positives are basically unheard of. The hormone that the test detects is only high enough to react to the test when you are indeed pregnant. My guess as to what happened is that she didn't get her period. My guess is that she had a very early miscarriage.

If the tests were positive and then negative, that means her baby was still living when she took the positive tests and had died when she took the negative. I'm sorry.

Unfortantely, it probably was an early miscarriage. The pregnancy tests are so accurate now they can detect pregnancy very early. In some instances earlier than when your period is supposed to arrive.

Tell her not to worry. It's very possible for her to get pregnant again quickly. It will never replace or make up for the angel she lost, but she will hold her baby in her arms.

It could be that she was pregnant and then sadly lost it, which I've heard of it quite common, in early pregnancies.

She should go to her nurse for more advice on this. It would be like winning the lottery if she wasn't pregnant in the first place but still got three positive out of three tests.

She could still be pregnant, don't write the pregnancy off so soon. Many women bleed early in pregnancy and don't miscarry. Have her see a Dr. for a blood test.

Just wait pregnancy tests dont tell you you are pregnant when you are not it is more like to be negative and be wrong. Stressing about it isnt healthy. If you were and arent anymore its a blessing and wasnt meant to be. When your body is ready it will happen.

She could still be pregnant and might be just having one last period. She should go visit her doctor and have them do a blood test or a ultrasound.

Was her period light, normal or heavy? What color was it?

Unfortunately, my theory would be that it was a miscarriage. :(

She should go to the doctor, to be sure, though, b/c if it was a miscarriage, they need to be sure everything has been released from her body so not to cause infection. :(
