Racial and cultural strife are nothing new in America. The "troubled" ethnicity 150 years ago was the Irish - most of whom emigrated to America to escape famines caused by British exploitation of the Irish economy. Irish labor was used to dig canals (very dangerous) in pre-Civil War New Orleans because slaves were too valuable. Signs warning NINA (No Irish Need Apply) were common 100 years ago in New Orleans. It took the Irish more than 100 years to become part of mainstram America - Do you recall the controvery over JFK (an Irish Catholic) running for President?

Other groups have had their turn in the "undesirable" barrel, including Chinese "Chinks" and "Dumb Swedes". Italians were infamous in the late 19th to mid 20th century as an outlaw ethnicity. Their situation was examined by numerous films, including the "Godfather" trilogy.

Vietnamese are the most recent large group of immigrants to reach America. The fall of South Vietnam prompted their exodus to the USA. High school Valedictorians tend to be ethnic Vietnamese in the areas where they settled.

All of these groups assimilated into American culture - For example, Saint Patrick's Day is tomorrow.

Hispanics are coming to the USA in huge numbers, but they too will be assimilated by the social grinder that is America.

African-Americans are a special case due to a variety of factors. The easy cliche is the legacy of slavery is still holding African Americans back. However, "******" in America during the 1950s had no more and possibly fewer social problems as a society than did whites. The various civil rights acts and court decisions of the 1950s and 1960s eliminated legal discrimination based on race. So, what happened in the meantime to create the "thug culture" described by Bill Cosby? A lot of it is due to activists who were prominent in the civil rights era but who have NO ROLE once the "struggle" is won. For them, there MUST be no improvement since 1968 - or their power (and funding) goes away.

Reality is that African Americans ARE assimilating and a few more generations will make that reality plain. Being African American in a few decades will mean no more than being Irish American does today.

The educated ones will because we know it is in our best interests to intermix with people different experiences. There will always be stupidity and hate so there will always be racism. It is a consequence of a free society that the educated must accept those that lean toward old ways.

We will not be the Balkans, or more specifically the states of Yugoslavia, though we cannot really be proud of the reason. Natives of the Balkan states hold onto the hatred passed down from many generations and they are indigenous to the land. Most of us have our ancestry in European African and Asian countries because the natives here were either shipped off to reservations or killed by disease, so there is not the same strong ties to the land. For most of us our bonds to the land run not much deeper than the Homestead Act.

And even then job opportunities, weather, and political stability encourage many of us to move around many times in our lives. Even in places with rich tradition we have our limits -- look at the current population of New Orleans. Blacks have stayed away from moving back to the same prejudice but Mexicans have taken great advantage of the reconstruction jobs available. Probably not the shade of chocolate Mayor Nagin envisioned for his city.

No. All anythings of anything will never manage to all get along. People just aren't that reasonable and if there's one thing George Bush should have taught us it is that a trouble maker can talk good people into doing bad things.

The pseudo bleeding heart somewhere up the list crying for the oppressed past of his people is a good example of the sort of seemingly reasonable but actually inflammatory language that people use to make the issues persist.

no the races will never get a long, there have been to many acts of oppression and exploitation. No you Americans are going to invent a whole new type of mess, but similar to the Balkans. The sooner your group starts the better your chances of winning. A truism of war the attacker has the initiative.

nicely, enable's see....if we hadn't "performed alongside," Hitler ought to are transforming into the bomb first. and then we ought to all be talking German now and many people doesn't exist. everybody who thinks we could continuously have omitted something Hitler did is a fool and lacking understanding about the conflict. for sure, lacking understanding hasn't ever stopped a liberal from forming an opinion.
