My computer has 256mb of ram in it, but when I look at the system information in the control pannel, it says it only has 192mb of ram. Why dosen't it see all of the ram and how do I fix it?

It is an emachines computer that is only a year old. I didn't add anything to it (video cards, cd burners, etc.), and has Windows XP home edition on it.

I had the exact same problem with my emachines. emachines builds their computers for "value," so they share the ram with the video card. Your (as well as my) video card is a 64MB video card. 256-64=192. you do have a 256mb stick of ram in your PC, it's just that some of it is being used on your graphics card. (i spent several hours on emachines customer support on this, trust me, i remember.) The only way to "fix" this is by adding another stick of ram (512 mb is the least you want). I suggest purchasing from newegg.com. One good stick for your computer (if it is like mine) is this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820220063. Your paying about $3 more than the cheapest one on the website, which is an off-brand, but with this one, you get the Partiot brand name.

You probably have a graphics card that uses part of system RAM
In fact, your graphics card uses 64MB! 192 + 64 = 256
Get more RAM. Cheapest at http://www.pricewatch.com

'cause some of it's taken up by the operating system and pre-loaded stuff....
