because st. pattys day started in ireland...ireland is like the homeland of green...its just a lucky color....

There are many theories as to why green is the official color of this holiday. The most common ones are:
1. Shamrock is green in color
2. Green is the color of spring which starts around this time
3. Green is connected with nature and hope
4. Probably to honor Ireland, as it is nicknamed 'The Emerald Isle' for its plush green landscape.
Whatever be the reason, if someone forgets to wear green on St. Patrick's Day, those who are wearing green are allowed to give the offender a pinch as a reminder. However, if you pinch someone who is wearing green, that person gets to pinch you back ten times! School children started this tradition. :)

Because it is an irish holiday. Ireland is a very green place. When Irish immigrants came to the US they would talk about how they missed the emerald island. They passed it down.
