They are now only making the same money in the Grand Slam events-- At this weeks Pacific Life Open, in which the men are playing best of 3 sets just like the women (until the men's final which has historically been best of 5 sets), the men's semifinalists start out making $125,000. The women's semifinalists start out making $73,950. They are playing the same amount of tennis, but the men are making more money. The bodies that govern the Grand Slam tournaments are acknowledging that the women are equal to the men in drawing power and selling tickets, and therefore should be paid the same as men.

To tell you the truth, I never knew that women only played a max of 3 sets and ihave been watching and playing tennis for several years, but I think that it is due to the riseing fact that the world wants to become "equal" no matter race or gender. At first, i thought it was good that women and men were being paid the same, but now that I know women don't do as much work as men, i think the men should be paid more. All in all, I feel that the tennis world is starting to pay women the same amount as men because they have a mind set that men and women should be treated equal, and they are not takeing into consideration the amount of playing they are doing.Very good question.

They actually tried doing a best of five sets with women for a short period back in the '80's. Every tournament where they did it that way was won by Martina Navratilova. None of the other women could hack it. It's best for women to do 2 of 3 sets merely because they don't have the physical stamina or strength that men have. There has been talk lately of starting the first several rounds of the major tournaments for men at best of 3 sets because playing 7 five set matches inside of two weeks is hard on the body over the course of a year. Injuries are on the rise, pullouts of players over the course of the year is on the rise, etc. Tennis at the highest level is brutal on the body. Asking men to go play 35 sets of tennis in two weeks is a lot, but asking it of women is ludicrous. It's as silly as asking a man to bear children; they just aren't made to do that.

I believe tennis has itself to blame for this. The reason for equal pay is the revenues brought in are at least equal. I am surprised they don't pay the women double. For the last 12 years or so, watching men's tennis is just like watching golf - boring. I only watch women's tennis - it looks like the game i grew up with Borg, McEnroe, Conner's - lots of volleying or action. The present mens game just looks like serving practice. I think I stopped watching when Sampras's serve started dominating. At this same time they started coming out with all these new types of lightweight and larger rackets. Imagine baseball with a 6 inch wide carbon bat - I don't think so. Anyway, as a fan i got very nervous/excited watching huge volleys. There was big time drama! Now in the men's game I can leave the game for 20 minutes and still see the same cannonball serve.

It is absolutely AMAZING how many times this question has come up. Why are so many people so hung up on this?

The number of sets men or women play has nothing to do with it. The genders are equal partners in growing the sport and putting fans in seats, so they get equal pay.

The women used to play best of 5 sets during the finals of the year-end WTA Tour Championships until 1999. I miss that.

They probably base it on the maximum ability of the sex. They feel that women do not have the stamina to finish five sets of tennis. I honestly dont know, that is a really good question.
