My son is 9 months old, teething, and in pain. I have been giving him Tylenol (12 ml, as recommended by my ped) for the last few days, but only once - at night. I know it is safe to give a baby pain medication even every four hours, so I am not even close to that limit. However, I have been giving my son Tylenol ever night. After how many days should I take a break?

Honestly, I give my baby Ibuprofen every night that she needs it. I do the same thing you do...........give it at night only and not during the day at all. I go by her........if she is fussy and chewing her hands and in obvious pain, I give it. But if she is not seeming to be in pain, or really really tired that I think she can sleep through it, I don't give it.
As long as you are giving it at night only, your baby will be fine. Their body can process that with no problem. Just stick to at night only , and don't give it when the baby is having a good night or when the pain seems to be non-bothersome.

p.s.
he will not get addicted. it is Tylenol for gosh sakes! Give it when needed and he will be fine. oragel burns open tissue, so it gets worse before it gets better. and it is very short lasting. the Tyelnol will hold better at night. and who wants to take a cold wet washcloth to bed anyway??

p.p.s
It only says not to take more than a certian number of days on the box because otherwise people would give it all the time and never call their doctors. If you are treating something that your doc knows about (you are, you said so) and following the reccomended dose, you have nothing to worry about. flu, fevers, etc should not be treated more than a few days with just tylenol..........teething, on the other hand, is going to last much longer. you are fine the way you are doing things.

good luck.......

Even just once a day, the medicine can lose its effectiveness. I would stop after a week and better yet, avoid giving it at all unless the baby is so miserable tht he can't sleep. There are drops (which last about ten miutes), and cold things to chew on. The pain in this case has a function, it makes the baby want to bite down and help the tooth come through. Some babies feel it worse than others but all of them can make it through. Make sure to take a break for a few days every week and if the baby is really just too miserable, don't be afraid to call her pediatrician.

try using baby orajel or something for the actual numbing of the hurting gums, this way you may not need as much of the pain medicine...you don't want him to get addicted to pain medicine...that is way to common these days....also a simple wash cloth that is cool helps them to bite and eases the pain a lot of times...hope this helps

I don't know the exact number of days please don't take this as a smart comment but look on the medicine it usually says don't take more than such and such of days in a row.
