I just heard that there's a recall on a ton of different pet foods,
from Purina, and a couple other unknown ones. It's causing renal failure and death.
Go to the FDA for more info, but I'd advise not feeding your pets any canned or dry
pet food until they release what exactly the recall applies to tomorrow.
I'm worried now, we've been feeding our cats Purina all month.
Please, please look into this if you have pets.

I am devasted by this. Fortunatly dogs are not being affected as much as cats according to the FDA. Two of my four cats fell ill within two days with renal failure and then ended up having to be euthanized. This was in February. Well I saw the recall and I now KNOW in my heart this is what happened. I called a DVM and PHD from teh FDA article. My cats ate "Special Kitty" brand pouches from Wal mart everyday. The two that do not eat this are fine. I found a link on the PETA website of what foods MENU BRAND makes. These foods (including the ones i purchased) are at Wal mart, safeway and Kroger. Here are the brands Albertsons, A&Ps master choice, Authority, Award, sophistacat (pet smarts), IGA, Kroger, Loblaw, Pathmark, Safeway select, shoprite, Stop and shop and Wal marts special kitty. These brands are all manufactured by MENU BRANDS but may not all be affected. I do have two dead cats to prove that the Special Kitty was affected. Any one who has been affected i am going to attempt to file a class action lawsuit please email me at Lucky2bsjtp@yahoo.com PLEASE no prank emails or solicitations folks, this is serious. PLEASE, i dont know how else to get affected persons together.

The foods that are being recalled are actually distributed to various stores and pet stores by a company called Menu Foods out of Canada. They distribute the foods in foil packs and cups ie: chunks and gravy. The foods will actually be store branded product, such as Ol Roy for Walmart.

If you go to the Menu Foods site, they are going to be posting an entire list of the recalled product as of 6 AM on Saturday the 17th of March.

Thank you for the information, I do not see any indication that any of the three brands you have mentioned are involved, it appears to be store branded items only.

The site said that ten cats have passed away from this problem.

Heartbreaking.

A little comment to Nursing4, I am so sorry for your loss. It is devastating to lose a beloved pet, especially to something that should be safe for them to consume.

All major pet foods come from the same rendering factory! To think that some are safer than others would be a silly assumption.

Please Please Please beware of all comercial pet food!! After doing a lot of research and learning that purina, kibbles and bits, nine lives or any pet food bought at a super market is TOXIC!!! They bring cows ( and other animals) that die before they get to slaughter and just render them into food w/out knowing why or how they died. No dog or cat needs corn and that is a big filler in most commercial dog food, it comes from horrible sources, such as sweepings off the factory floor. Not to mention the chemicals and colors they add. Dogs and cats don't need any color in their food, they just need nutrients.

If you go to the canidae (a good dog & cat food) website and enter in your zip you can find a store that can really educate you about this matter!

Please tell eveyone you know to read this book!

If you have been feeding your cats Purina food, you don't have to worry. No Purina cat foods are involved in the recall.

I read that so far only canned food has been the culprit. My dog loves purina so its pretty scary!

I would never feed my animals Iams anyways. They treat the animals they test on so terribly I could never support them!

I read there is a website that is suppose to update everyone the bad pet food. Its http://www.menufoods.com/recall . I havent been able to get the website to load so far so maybe someone else will have better luck.

Rskpetz: Yeah i really agree! It's reallllly healthy for dogs and althought it may be kind of expensive, it's so worth it!

There is no "poisoning" link yet (or so they say).

It affects some fairly limited items, supposedly... Mostly the wet food (that your kitty shouldn't be eating too much of anyway, but that's a different answer ;).

Supposed to have a list out tomorrow.
