Pig styes were a common feature of English country gardens before the first world war. People kept a pig and fattened it on the household scraps. when big enough it was slaughtered and the meat made into various preserved products, salt pork, sausage, smoked meats etc.
They did not have fridges & freezers then.
The pig stye was a mess because a pig will dig up the ground and all the waste was just tipped into the trough.
If your house is a mess, some will say it is a pig stye.
