I have been approached by career consultants rather than main companies (so far). They provide free training and offer job to companies who are their clients. Things sound good. But is that the real story? Can any one help me, possibly with real experience?

If you are highly degreed and/or experienced companies do pay to find you. Usually about 4 months of your pay, so this can be pretty lucrative. Many high tech jobs, with smaller companies, only hire this way, as they do not need full time HR personal and none of them have the time/skills to go over resumes.

The companies that hire you are the ones that do the paying, so if you are charged a nickel for anything you are being scammed.

I am not sure what "free training" would be about, usually terminology like that, ie "free seminar", means that they are looking to sell you something.

If you have common skills you have nothing to really offer a head hunter, they are after people with specific and unusual skills and high end management people.
