Depends on your definition of metal, but Eddie Van Halen and Yngwie Malmsteen forever changed hard/heavy guitar playing. Vinnie Vincent would also get a vote if he had done more stuff. And if Dream Theater can be considered metal, John Petrucci is mind blowing.

the guitarist from disturbed is pretty good, but I don't listen to allot of metal anymore, more rock music now.
