Usually, adding a 'y', 's' or 'er' at the end or middle of a name is how far hockey nicknames go. 'Clarky', 'Weighter' or 'Jags'.
On the other hand, there are some strict formulas as well:
All Smiths (or Smyths) are 'Smitty'
All Joneses are 'Jonesy'
All Sullivans are 'Sully'
All Campbells are 'Soupy'
Of course, some guys' actual names are better than any nickname?
Garth Butcher
Paul Lawless
Jeff Beukaboom
Bruce Shoebottom
Michel Petit (Mike Small in English)
My favorite Sabre ones are:
Numminen - Hello, Numminen (seinfeld reference)
Drury - American born hockey God (ode to buccigross)
Afinogenov - Figgsy (why not?)
B. May - Mayday
Puppa - All Universe or puppa scoopa
C. Ramsey (from the 70's) - Rammer
Best new nickname in the league is...
Marc Edouard Vlasic - Pickles

1- Maurice "The Rocket" Richard
2- Gordie Howe "Mr. Hockey"
3- Wayne Gretzky "The Great One"
4- Felix "The Cat" Potvin
5- Eldon Reddick "Pokey", Daniel Berthiaume "Bandit" Together these players made a great one-two punch for the Jets between the pipes, while their names became a perfect tandem as a tribute to a classic Burt Reynolds film as "Pokey and the Bandit."
6- Georges Vezina "The Chicoutimi Cucumber"
7- Max Bentley "The Dipsy Doodle Dandy from Delisle"
8- Dave Semenko "Cementhead"
9- Dave "Hammer" Schultz
10- Chris "Knuckles" Nilan
11- Garth Butcher "The Strangler"
12- Stu Grimson "The Grim Reaper"
and my favourite of all time well hes is my favourite player of all time Larry "Big Bird" Robinson.

The Population in Pominville.
Not techinically a nickname, but still.
Everyone outside of Buffalo is either Roli or Conks or Gomer or Patty or Jonny or the Wall or the Great One...I don't find those to be tremendously creative. Buffalo has the best nicknames because the have RJ. My opinion, of course.
Though I do like the Boulin Wall. And I didn't know that Carey was called the Net Detective until I read this post.
Radek Bonk doesn't need a nickname, his name is hilarious enough. I call him Radek Doink. So there. That's my favorite. :)

I notice how you are stuck on those Sabres. That said, I'll chuck out a few "good ones"-
The best has to be Jim Carey-The Net Detective
Liked the Hammer and Tiger. How about the Rat? Cujo is awesome. Going back a ways for the "Chicoutimi cucumber."
The Rocket and Pocket Rocket. The Moose. Lucky Luc.
Another good one is "The Bulin Wall" or Big Bird.
Cheers

the goose! Paul Gaustad = extremely good player and extremely good looking! I think some of your nicknames a re a little silly, but if I'm guessing right you're in your early teens and I can remember coming up with crazy nicknames for guys I liked back then (and still do occasionally so I can talk to my friends about them without other people knowing!). My other fave would be the Dominator, Dominic Hasek. Classic Sabres awesomeness in that name right there.

Good luck in the playoffs for your team! I like the Sabres. They are not my favorite, but I have a sweet spot for small market teams... which is ironic, because my favorite team is Detroit... but only because that is where I am from. :-)
Oh, wait! You were asking a question!! Ha ha. How silly of me.
My all-time favorite nickname was Pat Verbeek's: "Little Ball of Hate."
Classic.
