In the USA many towns in New England and the Middle Atlantic states are named after towns in Britain, where the settlers originally came from. And towns in the Ohio Valley and Midwest are named after the New England towns that their settlers came from, and many towns in the west are named after towns that their settlers came from in the Midwest.

So, you have names like Concord, Springfield, Portland, etc in many different states.

There are Springfields in New Brunswick and Ontario, Canada and in Massachusetts, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, and other states - Ohio has two! Probably the Massachusetts one is the original. (ps the town of Springfield in the Simpsons tv show was designed by a guy from Massachusetts and a lot of the buildings in the Simpson's town look like buildings in his hometown)

The word "spring" means a place where underground water comes to the surface of the ground. So, a spring field is a field where there is one of those natural wells.
