According to the National Institute for Research in the Amazon, this forest is estimated to be disappearing at the rate of close to 14,000 square miles a year. Walker figures that about 10 percent of the Amazon basin has already been deforested. The estimate takes on a frightening dimension when you consider that the Amazon area--all two million square miles of it--is nearly three times the size of the planet's next largest rain forest. More trees are being destroyed daily there than anywhere else in the world, Walker says. The thousands of miles of rutted jungle roads that he rambled over may be the most accountable culprit. For more than 20 years, the Brazilian government has maintained a policy of cutting new trails through the Amazon, to open up the area for economic reasons. While it has reportedly discontinued the practice now, the government for years offered enormous tax incentives to logging, cattle ranching and farming operations alike if they would agree to pioneer the area. Every time a new road opens, migrant farmers from the city looking for a new start as well as well-heeled loggers and cattle ranchers have pounced on these now vulnerable areas. There are now so many people living in the forest that the country's social services don't even begin to keep up with them.
