I believe that a doula is worth the extra money and more. She can help you to avoid unecessary medical intervention by helping with your pain management techniques and fighting off anyone who tries to push meds or cut you. There are studies out there that correlate doulas with lower Cesarian rates, higher rate of breastfeeding success, and higher overall satisfaction with the birth process in the mother. I loved my doula (she was also a massage therapist).

The purpose of a good Doula is to be a support person to you and your support people. I had one during my labor and delivery and she was SO helpful in reminding my husband of everything we had talked about prior to the labor starting. She helped us get into the laboring positions I requested and was able to communicate with the nurses in a way I never would have been able to. This allowed for less intrusive laboring because they knew she was in there with me, they did not have to come in as often. I would highly recommened one if there is one available!

Some offered to be doula for us for free, as she was new and needed the experience, but after a lot of consideration we said no, we didn't want any extra people. I especially wanted it to be a very private time with just my husband for support, and it was :)

the in undemanding words individual I had in the shipping room for the delivery of my 3 young ones replaced into my husband and the medical team. that's a own and private second that i think should be left for couples in undemanding words. If for some reason my husband couldn't were there my best buddy may were there yet above my head in undemanding words.

yes they are worth every penny you spend on them, i used one on my last delivery and she was there for me both at home till it was time to go to the hospital and all the way thru delivery and stayed with my baby in the nursery when i had to have emergency surgery.( she also saved me from an unneccessary epsiotomy)
she reminded me to continue to follow thru with my plans and even reminded the doctor and the nurses of things they had the right to do to and for my self and for my baby.
she was even there during my hospital stay (not all the time) and visited several times once the baby and i went home and then came to her baptism and birthday party

If you have a supportive husband and family, and a good OBGYN, then you don't need a doula. It's just an extra cost and an extra person. Too many people in the room and too many with "knowledge" of what you want and what is needed just causes problems. I'm mom to 3. I did have a childbirth class that was taught by a doula, certified the highest they can be, belonged to all the organizations for doula's and everything. SHE"S the one who told me what I said in the beginning.

The only thing that is worth the extra money is the special meds...have someone (spouse/mate, parent, sister...etc) who loves you in there with you...the doctors and staff should be helpful enough. You and your loved ones should learn more about pregnancy and labor also by reading, going to classes, etc....
