Vegetarianism dates back millennia in India and was even popularized in the West for its spiritual qualities by India's Mahatma Gandhi. Today, there are at least two more reasons to go vegetarian, or at least become more vegetarian: the selfish argument and the big picture argument.

We'll start with the big picture. Producing meat for the world's growing billions of mouths is taking a big toll on the Earth. A Cornell study showed that producing meat protein is eight times more energy intensive than producing vegetable protein. And a University of Chicago study showed that six per cent of U.S. greenhouse emissions come from the extra energy used to produce meat.

Now, the selfish argument: your health can be improved by eating a more vegetarian diet. There's one caveat, though. A strict vegetarian diet requires careful planning in order to get all the iron, B-12, and other nutrients your body needs. Still, even part-time vegetarianism pays off for the environment, your body, and t

No, I don't agree. Wouldn't that also mean that you are not an environmentalist if you ate vegetables. That would be damaging the plant.

I don't agree with it. People eat far more meat than they should--both our health and our environment hurts because of it--but it's impossible to judge a person's views on the environment by their diet. Some people cannot be vegetarian or vegan because of health issues.

I believe you can still be environmentally responsible and eat meat. You simply buy from small, local producers rather than the large factory type producers. They tend to be much more environmentally sound than the large producers and they treat their animals better. Not to mention you get a tastier product and support your community at the same time.

ETA: I believe the questioner is referring to the fact that the amount of resources to generate one pound of meat in a factory farm setting is grossly disproportionate in value to the food/nutritive value of the meat produced. They waste a LOT of water and other resources for that pound of ground chuck you get from the grocer's.

The Old Testament is not our guide to what man can or cannot eat today.

We are told today in the New testament that "every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving." (1 Tim 4:4, KJV)

Eating meat is acceptable to God therefore being an Environmentalist is moot to eating meat.

You are not a vegetarian if you still eat meat. You are not an environmentalist if you disregard conservation.
