First of all, it's commonly known as "defrag your hard drive" not "defrage your computer".
That being settled, it depends on how much file creation and deletion you do on your computer.
If you're very active creating, saving, moving or otherwise changing the contents of your hard drive, then once a month is probably not outrageous.
If your not doing a whole lot of that, probably once every 3 months isn't a bad guess.
Others have suggested that you analyze the disk with the defrag utility to know whether you need to or not. This is probably a valid statement if you're a heavy disk user as above, but if all your doing is email and surfing the web, then the analyzer will probably not pick-up the need to defrag your hard drive, since the number of files in a fragmented state on a low-volume user probably won't be enough to trigger the analyzer to suggest a defrag.
Good luck,

Do the following to defrag :
start
my computer
local disk C: - right click
properties
second tab at top - TOOLS
error check
error check NOW
make sure you check both boxes - START
(now - your computer may tell you that you have to restart
to get this feature to kick in - becuase it wants to be the
only one running)
Do it once in a month.
OR
There is a cool software: Ashampoo Magic Defrag, available on Ashampoo.com
It itself determines when to defrag, and automatically starts downloading. You, just have to install and forget !!!

Analyze it first to see if it needs to be defragged. Once a month is generally good, unless you install and delete a lot of stuff. Then it may need to be done more often.
