Bettas are usually a good resident for a community tank.... except when there are baby fish (fry) in the tank. Bettas are carnivores in the wild and will hunt down any small fish and eat them.

Get yourself a plastic breeder box at the fish store (about $4) and next time you see the female (rounded anal fin) getting fat with a dark area on her abdomen, gently place her in the breeder box in the tank. There are directions on the package on how to set it up so it floats in the tank. Sometimes they attach to the inside glass of the tank too. It has a V-shaped insert in it that allows the babies (fry) to fall down into the box away from the female (who may also eat them) and the box keeps them from the other fish in the tank.

If you use a breeder "net", put some bushy plants in the net with the female so the fry have someplace to hide from her.

If you have a male and female platty, and they have been together more than a month, you have had fry. Problem is that the fish are probably eating the babies.

They do sell breeder nets and plastic breeders for fish. I don't care for the nets. There are breeder tanks that have slats on the bottom for the fry to fall thru so that they are away from the mom and she won't be able to eat them. Just put the adult fish in the breeder just before she gives birth and remove her soon after.

Good Luck

He ought to circulate after the guppies, they does not be a competent tank mate. lady Platies (no longer male) might paintings, yet Platies are perfect in communities, so which you would be wanting a minimum of three, and for which you may want a 10 gallon tank. Your tank extremely is in basic terms too small for the Betta you have already got in it, and additionally you extremely can no longer upload any further fish in there. in case you choose extra fish, you will in basic terms could improve to a 10 gallon. you may quite have a heater fand a sluggish moving filter out.

FIst off, i have to say that you can't breed betta fish with platys. Second, are you sure that you have a male and a female platy, if not, there will be no fries (baby fish). So, ask the pet store what gender it is.

Jessica,
The first thing I would look at is "Are my platies female?"Is a mature male with them? And how long has their tank been established?
You can tell a pregnant female at the fish store pretty easy. Now Plat ties are LIVE bearers....so once you start having babies you best separate the elders from the young as they will eat them.
The Betta shouldn't be a threat to the elder platties.Once the babies come...you do want to remove the Beta as he/she will eat the young.
I won't insult you,and tell you Patties and beta's wont mate with each other...I know you know this.

Bettas and platies are two different species and won't mate. If you have a male and a female platy, they may have reproduced but the other fish (especially the betta) will have eaten all the babies.

You may be getting babies and not see them before the Betta or others eat them. Baby fish are like mosquito larvae and very tasty.. I suggest lots of hiding places for the fry (fuzzy greens floating in the aquarium will help some of them survive).
