If 85% of america is overweight shouldn't the proper weight people get handicapped licenses since they are the minority. We are rewarding hippos by putting them closer to the door, thus encouraging fat people to flourish throughout america. Not to mention it is depriving actual people in need.

I'm only speaking of people who lack a disablity to begin with other than being fat. Also, immobility is no excuse for being obese, there are many skinny quadriplegics.

I am not condoning ALL the fat handicapped here, but one reason so many handicapped people are so overweight is that they have physical limitations and they cannot exercise as much as they need to for their food intake, which leads to the food intake may be one of the few pleasures they have left and so they go overboard. Other times there are medical reasons they are so overweight. I do however, see a lot of 'handicapped' people who I would believe to be abusing the system. I also see a lot of people who are NOT handicapped using the handicapped spots. I am just waiting for the drive thru handicapped to be added to many department stores so these 'poor' people don't have to get out of their car at all! It makes me angry sometimes, but on the other hand, I am handicapped and my disability does not show to the public, so a lot of people would think me not handicapped and abusing the system. That is one reason I don't have a handicapp plate. I just go shopping at off hours when the stores are not crowded and can get a close normal space to park.

I disagree about the 99% part; but being significantly over wieght destroys your knee joints, your spine, your hip joints, your ankle joints. Also over wieght people are prone to heart disease. Maybe being handicaped can lead to lack of exercise and wieght gain but the reverse is true more often. Most handicaped people are old in my part of the world. BTW I am so far over ideal wieght myself that my doctor says that most people my size cannot walk. I am fortunate in that I can walk and am not handicaped, I work up to 60 hours a week. My knees do hurt but I carry on. I have been on a diet for 5 weeks with a goal of 2 years.
Never judge somebody else until you have walked in their shoes. Some pain that you may yet see in your life is unimaginable to you now I am positive. I know I've been there.
If your young and fit just wait, I notice most loud mouthed people who put me down in life have ended up with a pot gut now and or they are married to a woman who is not what she was, or guess what? Their kids are fat. Fat people are the only people left in the world who it is okay to bad mouth. I think the majority cannot help themselves for a variety of reasons. One being they just do not know how. Fat, old age, being drunk or dope head just sneak up on you a little at a time. Don't think I have not tried to lose wieght because I have lost plenty but it comes back. A life change is required and only about 1 in 28 people are successful at it. If you have 5 pounds extra weight I challenge you to shed it. I bet in 2 years if you do you will have 20 extra.

Actually, obesity is considered a disability now, and most had no disability prior to obesity. Their illnesses and mobility issues developed due to the obesity.
So an obese person CAN get a handicapped permit strictly based on obesity -- I am not saying all people with handicap permits are obese first, but that a person with a primary diagnosis of obesity can get a handicapped permit. I don't personally see primary obesity as a handicap I see it as a life choice and therefore they should not carte blanche be entittled to handicap benefits.

Because they ride their scooters everywhere and run over peoples feet thus they get fat doing nothing but breathing, this puts excess stress on the muscles and joints causing pain to develop making these people less likely to walk anywhere. By the way who gave fat people the right to take up twice as much space as me, should they have to pay for this extra space that they use?

How do you know that these people with weight problems aren't in need? The weight could be causing knee and hip damage. So are you going to start making laws that only skinny people can be handicapped?

I agree with you, but I think they need to get to the food court faster.
Everyone is giving the questioner grief, but think about what you see in a typical mall. Fat mom and dad sit down in the food court with their already overweight children. They go to Boardwalk Fries or someplace similar and get greasy fries, a fat filled hot dog or hamburger and wind it up with some ice cream. Then there is proper to just a bit overweight mom and dad. The kids look great because they are eating something more healthy like Asian food and/or salad plus they are still wearing their uniforms from a sports activity that keeps them active. It is unfortunate that overwieght people tend to hand down their bad habits, but I should not have to bear the results of it. They don't rate things:
Like getting 2 seats on a plane for the price of 1
Like the special parking
What about special parking for pregnant women?
I can tell you that when your 7-9 months pregnant, it can be hell to walk a distance.
Hey, I guess not all of them use up the spaces. Some don't even bother with parking lots and just park right in front of store door and leave their car there.
This said, there are those that have problems maintaining weight completely due to inbalances in their body. For these people is basically impossible to fight the weight battle and they deserve consideration. But they are such a miniorty of the overweight people in the US that I believe without a doctor's note saying this person has a problem they don't merit special treatment.

Maybe they became fat as a result of their disability? I'm from the UK, I don't think we give handicapped badges to people purely on the basis of them being overweight here.

Because the physical conditions that usually are required before someone can get a handicapped plate also usually prevent that person from exercising.
