If CBS is paying for it - certainly.

In general, booking a flight, especially international will cost much more than normal if you try getting it a few hours before the flight is due.

In the Amazing Race scenario however, the seats have already been booked by CBS. All that remains now is for the contestants to get the tickets for the best flight fastest. From previous shows, this has included:
* Getting to the airport first
* Managing to get to a travel agent who will confirm the best flight booking for them before they get to the airport
* Winning in a challenge where the prize is for the airline ticket (those who complete the challenge earlier can get the flights that leave earlier)

the contestants on the amazing race do not actually have to pay for the tickets this is the one thing they do not pay for on the race. They have to book the tickets but the airline has the set tickets they can sell to them and I guess the tickets are charged to cbs by one of the producers prior to the actual race. The producers actually travel the full race route long before the race starts

I strongly doubt it. It is never cheap to book tickets last minute at he airport. The airline knows that you are need the ticket and you have to pay what they ask. Unless you traveling to a destination where they are few travelers like Baghdad.

Maybe for a budget airline but then most budget airlines have their seats sold out well in advance.
