Don't listen to the Dell haters.

Dell has come a long way and their current charter is a better product, and improved customer support and relatiions.

We have 6 Dells in the family. 2 laptops and 4 desktops.

I just bought a new XPS 410 in December. It's a really good PC. I'm a believer in putting the money into a PC when you initially buy it because it will usually cost more to upgrade it later.

All of our Dells have performed flawlessly for years. No complaints here at all.

I do recommend that if you are going to buy a new pc from Dell, then go for the XPS. Firstly, the XPS is fully upgradeable with extra PCI, and PCI-E slots; 4 RAM slots able to handle 2G each; 2 hard drive capable; floppy capable; what else do you need?

Get the best Intel core 2 duo processor that you can afford; 1G RAM minimum, at least 160G hard drive, 256M RAM video card; CD/DVD +/- Burner. Opt out of the dial up modem unless theres no $ credited for not taking it; opt out of the floppy drive. Instead of the floppy, spend that money on a flash drive of either 512M or 1G memory for about the same money.

The only caveat I would make to a Dell package is the monitor they offer. All I have seen lately are the monitors with 500:1 contrast ratio. It's best to get one with a contrast ratio of 700:1 or higher.

Check out this Yahoo page for some info on monitors. There are two "For Dummies" articles that provide a lot of good info about monitors and buying one.

The best site I've seen for monitor deals is http://www.tigerdirect.com
You'll usually find several with really good rebate offers. Watch the prices and you'll see that the 17" monitors and the 19" monitors are essentially the same price. So go for the 19". Also be careful of the Aspect Ratio. 4 to 3 is the normal monitor config and the 16 to 9 is the wide screen. The only thing I don't like about widescreen is many monitors (and TV's) make people look squatty/squashed, and round faced. Just my opinion.

Hope this helps. Good luck and happy shopping!!!

I had that subject with my Dell Studio inspite of the incontrovertible fact that it grew to become out i became making use of the incorrect disks. purchase TDK it rather is the suited style and while you're making use of - writable then purchase + writable to objective if it rather is the subject. some drives at the instant are not nicely suited with + writable and a few at the instant are not nicely suited with - yet maximum are the two. additionally, make certain your paying for single sided disks that are 4.7gb.
