Besides the filter cleaning issue, my dryer salesman told me that the new dryers with dryness sensors can also get a build up on them from dryer sheets. He recommended putting fabric softener in the washer instead and to wipe down the sensor with with soap and water occasionally.

That's kind of true. All you need to do is once a month or so take the dryer lint screen out and wash is with dish soap and scrub it a little. even if you don't use fabric softener you should do this because all the detergent and dryer sheets etc leave a film on that screen. By cleaning it periodically you will lengthen the life of your dryer by increasing the ventilation in the dryer.
To prove my point just take it out of there, brush off the lint and put the screen under your faucet- you'll see that the water doesn't pass right through like it should because of the film that has accumulated.

I've heard that the filter becomes the safety issue. That the softener sheets clog up the filter, it gets too hot and it can catch on fire. No idea if that's really true.
Take the filter out, get all the lint off of it, then clean it in the sink with a scrub brush and warm soapy water. Dry it off with paper towels and that should be the end of it.
I prefer liquid downy in the rinse cycle, the downy ball rocks! It's already rinsed and softened in the washer so nothing weird happens in my dryer.

If the sensor is positioned in the drum and may nicely be touched by ability of the sheets, sure, that's real. over the years, the softener from the sheets will coat the sensor and make it ineffective. you may clean the sensor, for sure, yet even if that's in a tricky area, practice for some artwork. We always use liquid softeners in the wash water. Our dryer is now drawing near ten years of age and nevertheless works superb.

No it doesn't. Just make sure you clean your dryer filter with every load. Your dryer will heat up hotter than its supposed to if you don't do this frequently. If you don't well you might burnt it up. Just keep watch on the filter. Have fun with the loads.
