There are many such individuals and looking only at those outside of my family I can narrow this to two.
Lou Henry Hoover. She is one of the most intelligent First Ladies and one who became a proactive citizen of the world. Among many other achievements she was the one who began the desegregation of the White House.
There is also Ayn Rand who has likely impacted more people in terms of individual freedoms than anyone else in modern times.
Much more on these individuals came be found at the source Links:

I would definetely say Oprah Winfrey! =D
She is a strong woman. What she started out with, poverty, getting to know her grandma, then her mom, getting molested, running away from home, her extremely strict father who did help her......................................................
and now look where she is! Not only a wonderful talkshow host but she helps other people esp. girls in South Africa and other places get their chance and opportunity to study and have a career someday. Unlike many celebrites who adopt babies from Third-world countries as a new trend, she knows what other girls are going through because she has endured so much at such an early age.

I would have to say my 3rd grade teacher. She was awsome. I still thnk about her and wonder how she is doing. Also, my counslor. Without her love and support, I would never have made it through all the pain and hardship. It is because of her, I am considering going into social work.
