There is no way to get BETTER quality out of an mp3 than a cd. MP3 works by using compression and takes out the higher/lower frequencies that aren't used often. That's why when you have a low frequency mp3 you can sometimes hear a weird washed out sound when the compression starts to get into the normal range of sounds. In my opinion, once you get above 192kbs, it's pretty hard to hear a difference. I usually go to mid 200's and record it in a "variable bit rate" and I can't hear a difference. The variable bit rate is the best way to go as it adjusts to the music as it rips it to mp3 so the bit rate constantly changes. This way can also save you hard drive space as it won't rip it too high if the music doesn't call for it.

A standard mp3 is 128 bitrate anything higher is better quality and uses more kbps the highest is 320 = best quality sound for an mp3....CD quality is higher than a mp3 because a mp3 is compressed down about 9 times so a mp3 quality is less than a CD quality.

CD's use a far higher bit rate for their songs so a 700mb disc might only fit 14 songs on. This means CD's are higher quality. The only mp3 players with a memory big enough for it to be worth putting all you songs on at a bit rate of 1000kbps or higher (CD quality is above 1000kbs, mp3 is usually 128kbps so use much less space but lose quality) would need to be in excess of 20GB as even that would only fit 20 odd CDs on in full quality. I think the only players that will let you put music on in that quality are the archos mp4 players, the largest of which has a memory of 160GB.

If I'm right the maximum bit rate for an MP3 is 560 Kb/s, and definitely is better than a CD audio quality.

you can't get better quality than cd quality. but 320kbp should get you as close to cd quality as possible, while still being able to play them on your ipod.
