I was wanting to do this because I have an old version of Windows ME that has viruses on it and now they are on the XP and I would rather just start over and clean since the anti-viruses software(s) that I downloaded didn't work.

yes you can. go ahead and format the drive, pop in the winxp cd.and it will check your system. itll ask you to insert the win me ( or any other ) windows cd. this is just for verification you had windows ( why they ask i dont know ) after it reads the cd, itll prompt you to re insert the xp cd,and in approx 45 mins to an hr, your system will be finished installing. after that youll have the fun of reactivation ( dont do it too often, apparently you can only use the key so many times ) and re download all the updates for your system if u want. id advise that you get a antivirus suite that includes firewall etc,to protect your system. www.avgantivirus.com has a free trial download of their products, plus you can opt to purchase at any time

Yes if you have the recovery cds or xp cd it will give you option to do a restore or format the harddrive do the format and that should wipe the drive clean for a clean install of xp. Just remember to have and driver disks or software handy for any printer ,video cards or sound cards ,etc. you might have put in your system. And make backups to cds any items like your favorites links or such for the new install or you can start clean your choice. I prefer a mac i can reinstall the system and still keep my stuff . Apple is the way to go.

From what I've found, generally the company that you bought your computer from can usually send you a "Reboot" CD, if you call and tell them what is going on. It basically wipes your computer clean and gets rid of any preexisting data, without actually erasing Windows XP. The few times that I've had to do this with my parents computer, the process (once you recieve the CD[s] in the mail), generally takes an hour or so.

Yes ! why not ?

If you are looking to sell your computer go for Darik's Boot and Nuke. It will securly and permanently erased everything on your computer.

If you want to erase everything and re-install everything take the original Windows XP CD (don't install a copy, since a lots of copy containts trojan and virus)

Insert the CD in your computer and restart, press a key when the message tell you to do it.

In the installation process be sure to delete your partition and re-create it to be sure to have a fresh install. Not a upgrade or re-installed over a existing installation.

nicely, then you definitely use the different @*$&ing option that would not shop your information. that's no longer that problematical. And only for the reason which you're too ignorant to have good anti-virus utility on your device and don't worry to shield your self does no longer recommend you would be able to need accountable Microsoft on your deficiencies. i'm no longer a M$ fanboy and would be the 1st to confess that Macs and Linux do no longer go through the assaults the abode windows does. yet that may no longer the undertaking right here. That fact which you tousled your laptop and would't even examine the choice to repair your laptop and wipe it, then come right here all pissy using fact of your lack of ability to envision speaks volumes concerning to the main important situation you have: you mustn't have a working laptop or laptop interior the 1st place.

The quikest way is to just reinstall xp as this reformatts your hard drive and removes everything anyway

Hi. Sure. Do a 'format c:" at the run 'command'. You will need to have your install CD ready because the poor PC would not have a clue of what it's doing.
