I am also an artist, its very hard to get noticed, the easiest way though is to find a genre that you are interested in. join a few forums that are interested in this genre and stat to show some images you have drawn/painted/photographed or whatever images you like, and always make sure people know you are open to commisions.
Thats the first step in becoming a well known artist, this then gets you well known within a group or genre, the next step you then need to take is to start showing that you also have other styles/skills in other genres, as these people may have friends who want to commision someone or want to buy art in a certain genre, and once you have a small fan base built up it is easier to spread out and change genres.
Once you have started to get different types of your artwork out to the public, you then need to contact some small galleries in your local area, and see if they are interested in you doing an exhibition, make sure you have enough pieces and also a big portfolio. you can then advertise your exhibition in local media sources.
The next step is to then take your artwork to bigger and better galleries. Getting someone fairly famous to own one of your images is also a good step as they can then get more people in contact with you for commision work.
I hope this helps.

I think what you might actually be trying to say is how do you make money at being an artist.....because being noticed has actually probably alreaady happened....you noticed.
if you want some spotlight...enter some art shows, you can find them on the net.....but to make money...you gotta get to work, make cards you can pass out in hope of getting some work commissioned. You could even put up signs around town (like a garage sale sign)..."starving artist....seeks good tasted buyer....or whatever you come up with.....
......but the harsh reality is.......you might not ever.......Michelangelo was never famous.......and neither am I......How many people have ever heard of H R Escher, or Boris Vallejo.....sorry

Sleep with a gallery owner!
Just kidding, of course! Just submit your artwork anywhere you can and, if possible, see if there are any shows you can take part in for free or cheap. Sometimes they have little fairs, farmer's markets, or mini-malls where people set up shop for awhile. Try asking around local indie shops, too.....there's one in my neighborhood that buys gothic artwork from local artists, so I'm guessing that there are other shops which deal in all different genres. You could also try displaying and/or selling your artwork online.

My Brother is an artist for Marvel comics. Look for comic conventions coming up where you live, there are all kinds of artists displaying their work. You of course have to rent a table. Good luck! oh..you do not have to be a comic book drawer, all kinds of work is displayed at a convention.

show your work to everyone...post it on the Internet on some art sites..but it seems most famous artists don't get noticed until after they die..
