I have a supervisor sort of, then a line manager, then manager, not to mention how many arseees sitting on seats - I work in a very P.C. environment with old gossiping women, but my line manager is very approachable or should I just tell my manager and hope she will give me extra hours OR IS THIS A RISK TACTIC -????

If you are looking for a new position in the same company, tell your immediate supervisor. There is no reason to go over his or her head unless the other person is the one who can give you the job. By following the normal chain of command, you are more likely to get a good recommendation than if you skip your supervisor.

If you intend to look elsewhere for the job, don't say anything until it's a fait accompli. Trying to pressure them to raise your salary or something so you won't quit is seldom sucessful.

Too risky. Ask for more hours if this is what you want/need. Looking keen will definitely go in your favour. Applying for another job could seriously backfire - they might cut your hours, question your loyalty, hamper any chance of promotion, the list is endless. Far better to be straightforward and just ask for what you want. Don't play games.

If you are applying to a job in the same company, definitely tell your immediate/line boss, he/she may put in a nice recommendation for you. Plus, you don't want them to be blind sided by someone else coming to them for information.

If you are applying outside of your company, I wouldn't recommend saying anything, until you get a new job. If your company knows you are looking they make look for a reason to get rid of you, or get rid of you if they need to make budget cuts.

Your company should have an organigram which will show you your line of command! Tell you line manager of your wishes.

Tell your friend boss you are going for another job.

You do not have to leave the company, but if your friend boss tells their boss how good you are, well, you may get a promotion.

don't tell anybody until you have got yourself a new job.

If you don't get the new job you may have queered your pitch with your current employer.
