Most over the counter medication don't really CURE your baby...and at 5 weeks old...I'll be a little cautious about giving them medication. For the most part otc medication may help with congestion but it won't make your baby's sickness go away. I say it will probably a better idea to ride it out...you can buy some saline drops to help your baby if he/she has a runny nose. I just think that at 5 weeks babies are still too young and there was a study conducted that babies who were given medication often during their first year developed more allergies than those who were not. The sickness will also not go away in days...it will probably take a good week or so before your baby completely recovers
Just keep an eye on your little one if the cough/cold really starts to bother him/her and he/she is not sleeping good and not eating...then its time to take him/her to the doctor and maybe then you can get some prescription medication. But if your baby seems like he can ride it out...just let him/her. It will also give your baby a chance to develop immunity and this will eventually strengthen their system

There are lots of safe OTC cough remedies that you can use while breastfeeding. Just check the active ingredients in the medication before you buy it. Check out the website below for a list of medications and their safety while breastfeeding.

You mean for you, correct? Most OTC cough and cold medicines don't actually do anything at all. Cough drops are okay, but you really should check with the baby's doctor or yours before taking anything.

Unfortunitally they'll most likely say you can't take anything, which is a pain in the bum I know. I had a clogged nose afew months back and I wanted to get something for it and they said I couldn't have anything if breastfeeding. I could have just flicked the lady in the forehead I was so mad.
If you are willing to try something alternitive, a chinese doctor told me afew years back to get some Mint leaves, and make a pot of tea out of them and just drink mint tea all day long. Do not drink any colds drinks as that causes your body to react and cough. Also keep your chest and neck warm and stay out of airconditioned places or places where cool/cold air will be breathed in as that makes your chest cold and you cough.
Hope that helps - it sucks when you are sick and can't take anything to help.

Water is the best mucolytic you can have.If you want to take some OTC drug for your cough,I think you better take the one without harmful substance for your baby or read the label if it is not contraindicated to lactating or breastfeeding women.

Call your baby's doctor, have them check out your baby's heart and lungs. The baby is coughing for a reason and it could be serious.

Steam, humidity, hot tea, a little sugary soda can soothe the throat, Tylenol for pain, or my dad's favorite: a teaspoon of whiskey.
