It depends on the unit rate on your bill, but typically at about 10p/Kwh, you will pay 0.06 x 12 = 0.72 x 10p, about 7.2p for 12 hours. Reduce this to about 1.5p by fitting a 12 watt energy saving lamp, (same brightness) and about 8 times longer life.

ADDED!! Now you tell us! In that case a low energy lamp is no use as it puts out very litte heat. What happens to the tortoise for the other 12 hours, does it not get too cold. Why not get a heat mat, I think it would be less than 60 watts for a couple of square feet?! OR try a 40watt reflector lamp, it will give a narrower beam of heat/light.

It depends on how big you bill is now and your definition of massive.

£10 extra on a £50 bill would be a lot but £10 extra on a £300 bill isn't as bad. It's relative.

It isn't a good idea to do this, why do you need to?

If there is a valid reason, please make sure you use energy saving bulbs. Better for your wallet (even though more expensive to buy they last longer and use less electric) and the environment.

Hope that helps.

Probably not. 60 watt bulbs don't use very much power, but why don't you just buy energy saving bulbs they more expensive than ordinary bulbs but will be a big saving in the long run. Ive had the same bulbs in for over a year

If it is only a one off not too bad but if you did all year yes it would cause a considerable increase in your electrictricity bill as opposed to only having it on for 6 hours.

60W = 0.06kW Energy used = 0.06 x 12=0.72 kWhours or
0.72 units. If 1 unit costs say 7p then the cost per day would be a staggering 5p.
For a week....35p
Month....£1.50
Year...£18.25
It certainly won't break the bank.

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT 60 WATT, BUT WHEN I HEADED UP OUR NEIGHBORHOOD CRIME WATCH, AND WE ASKED PEOPLE TO BURN A 40 WATT BULB FROM DUSK TO DAWN, THE POWER AND LIGHT COMPANY SAID IT WOULD COST ABOUT $10 A YEAR.

Not a massive increase, but it would use an extra 262.8 kw per year.

Will only burn 720w per day so look at your last bill to see what you are paying per KW (1,000watts) And work out the cost from there.
(I don't think it will work out a lot)
