if they are put to sleep for no reason, thats bad.
or the kill shelters, those are bad too.
but if an animal is sick and suffering its better to let them go peacefully than to suffer any longer.

It depends on the situation.
Putting an animal to sleep because it's suffering, and there's no hope of a cure, is actually not horrible - it's merciful and the right thing to do - much better than letting the animal suffer for days, or even months.
However, it is horrible to put animals to sleep just because you don't want them anymore ("I got bored with that cat!"), and it is very, very sad that thousands of healthy animals have to be pts every day due to overpopulation - there are no free homes the shelters are overflowing, so the "least adoptable" pets are put down simply because the shelter has no other choice.
Putting a pet to sleep because you're bored with it, or because it doesn't match the new furniture, or because you've decided you'd rather have another kind of pet ids horrible for a number of reasons. Firstly, it shows great irresponsibility. Adopting a pet means taking over full responsibility for this pet, for live. You can't just shrug that off and have the pet pts because you've changed your mind - that's something everyone needs to think through bEFORE adopting.
Putting a pet down like that basically means punishing the pet for one's own irresponsibility.
Further, it's unjust: the pet is a living, sentient being with a right to live, and that shouldn't be taken away frivolously.
Alos, if a family does this, it sets a horrible example for the children, teaching them that pets are disposable.
Animals having to be put down by shelters due to overpopulation is sad also because the pets have a right to live and have done nothing wrong.
Further, it's sad because it'd be avoidable. If pet owners wre responsible and got their pets spayed or neutered rather than letting them breed willy-nilly, the overpopulation problem could be brought under control within a few (pet) generations. It's due solely to human negligence that that isn't the case.
Also, if shelters were better funded, they could keep more animals and wouldn't have to euthanize as many.

It isn't BAD to put animals down, it is humane. If an animal is very old or is ill with a serious disease ( dogs and cats can get cancer, diabetes, kidney failure, and heart problems, just like people) with no hope or chance of recovery, then it is just not fair to the animal to keep it alive. Animals that suffer serious injuries are often put down too- whether it's a racehorse like Barbaro or Pine Island, or simply a dog or cat that has been hit by a car on the highway. Putting down an animal that has no chance of recovery and will also always be in pain is the right thing to do, no matter how painful it is for the person or people who are attached to the animal. We don't like to do this because we want to believe that we can save all animals, especially those we are close to. But unless one believes in miracles, there simply isn't time enough, or resources enough, to help all the animals. Even with a miracle, it is still difficult. Death is painful for everyone. It isn't fair to force an animal, or a person, to face a life filled with pain for no reason other than because we don't want to let go. Part of the reason why people have such a hard time with this subject is because we really don't understand death, and because we don't, we fear it. No one really knows what is on the other side. Animals don't have this fear, because they don't know they will die one day, unlike people. When all they know is pain, it is better to let them go and end their pain. Hope this helps you.

I wouldn't say it's completely horrible. For example if you find out that your pet has fallen deathly ill with something that the vets cannot cure do you:
a. Let your pet suffer through it until natural death?
or
b. Put your pet to sleep to save it from all the pain and suffering as well as a huge vet bill from all the meds they give them to ease the pain?
However, in animal shelters if they've had certain animals for a long time or if the animal population is so much that they can't find anywhere for them they will usually put them down. Now by them, I don't mean all, it could be dependent on the health of the animal, I'm not entirely certain.
But if animals are being put down/to sleep for no good reason then I think you'll have a whole lot of animal activists crawling up your back side.
On that note, just to further my opinion, when I was a kid (you're going to call me a killer for this) my mom told us that all cats land on their feet, well I was 3 yrs old and my bro was 2, we decided we wanted to test that theory....long story short the cat did not land on it's feet and we had to put it to sleep - there was nothing else we could do. I'm really attached to animals now because of that whole experience and I think unless there is a good reason for it, it just shouldn't be done!

It depends on the situation. If your pet is old, in pain, or terminally ill, there's nothing wrong with putting it to sleep. Or if the animal was hit by a car and nothing could be done to save it. Some people have no choice; for example, they may be ordered by a judge to put their animal to sleep for the safety of other people. Our city pound will only euthanize an animal if A) it's a feral cat who can't be rehabilitated for adoption, B) if it's terminally ill and on the way out already, or C) if we've done all we can to rehabilitate and socialize it but the animal just won't open up to anyone/thing. But to euthanize an animal just because a person is tired of it, or because a person can't train it like they want, is immoral.

It depends on the situation. If an animal is put down because no one wants it, or it has no where to go then I would consider that to be cruel and inhuman. However; putting an animal to sleep because it is sick and/or in pain is another issue. If you’re pet is in pain it is better to let them go peacefully than to keep them here with us where they are in pain and could end up living like that for an extended period of time. I'd say the only time you should put an animal down is f there is absolutely no way to help it and it’s in pain. Another good thing about putting a sick pet down is you can be with them when they go. If you are work or go to school then it's possible they could pass away without you. Not only does being with your pet comfort you but, it can also help you gain closure by having a chance to say good-bye and come to terms with what is happening.
I hope this helped. Good luck on your essay.

I don't think it is bad to put animals to sleep if they have a medical issue. My puppy had to be put to sleep because she was born with a defect with her kidneys and the only way to make her better is a kidney transplant which does not work on dogs. She would have suffered and ultimately died. She wouldn't have been able to get better no matter when we took her to the vet. It would have been inhuman to let her suffer, and I know that I wouldn't want to see her suffer.
If you are saying that it is bad to put them to sleep because of an attack on a human, than I agree. I think animals can be rehabilitated just like humans. Animals may be born as an aggressive breed, but the only thing that makes them attack is under education of the public, owner, and an poorly trained dog which is the fault of the owner. It is awful to punish an entire breed like the pit bull because they were born aggressive. Many are put to sleep right away when found on the streets because of their aggression. It is illegal to own a pit bull in many places. If you need other option rather than euthanasia, you could say that someone may need a license to own a certain breed.

It isn't always bad to put an animal to sleep. I work at a vet clinic, and we have seen some very sick animals, who are suffering. Many times they are so sick that they are suffocating and can't breath on their own. In an animal that is that sick, euthanizing them isn't bad. When you euthanize, you are basically giving them an over dose of anesthetic. This allows the animal to relax. They feel like they are falling asleep, like going under anesthesia.
I think euthanasia is bad in young healthy animals. I think euthanasia is bad when a person has to put their animal to sleep because they can't afford treatment (not that they are always bad owners, it is just a bad situation). And when the over population of animals is so great that animal shelters have to euthanize young healthy animals, that would make someone a great pet. Or when an animal has to be euthanized due to a behavioral problem, that was the owners fault in the first place. I don't think that euthanasia is always bad, but these are some situations when I do think it is bad.

I think it depends o why they are being put dowm. Is it because they are in a lot of pain and there is nothing further the vet can do and their quality of life is suffering? In that case, putting them to sleep may be the kindest thing you can do for your pet. BUT some people just do it because they don't want the pet anymore, which is so awful .
Personally, I would have a hard time with it because I feel that the length of our lives is already written...only God knows when our time is up.

When animals are killed due to overpopulation or aggression, it's our fault, and that makes it bad. It's our responsibility to control pet population and to socialize them so they are not a threat to others. When they are killed because they are suffering, in pain and at the end of their lives, it's the greatest gift a pet owner can give a beloved pet. They look to you to help them, to ease their pain and suffering. It's harder on the owner than it is the pet, but it's the best thing you can do at that time; that and hold them while they begin the next adventure and you say good-bye.

It is not horrible, there are animals that cannot be saved, it depends on a lot of things. Is it better to have a dog or a cat suffering a slow, painful dead than giving them a shot that will make them fall asleep and die faster?.
What about dogs that kill babies or little kids?, animals that are so aggresive there is no way to make them comfortable around humans?. I don't think you should go with the no-kill hippy Peta propaganda, you should get the facts. There are a lot , LOTS of animals in animal shelters because there is no homes for them, is it better to make them live their lives in a cage without human contact? or throw them to the streets again to suffer?.
