World of Warcraft was enjoyable when I played it. It has a few nice features that include quest givers that are very easy to find, the ability to play alone, with a small group, or even a large raid group, and it seemed to be a very social game - many times you could be working on a quest where several other folks are and join up with them either for a few kills or even all weekend. Sometimes all that localized questing can be a bit competitive, though, as many people may not want to group and just get the quest done and move along. The loot is fairly good and drops with amazing regularity, but there are some undesirable features as some loots cannot be sold or given away if they have no use to you. There is also a "need before greed" feature that if done honestly can work really well, but occasionally you will run across a bad player who takes loot whether or not he or she needs it. I also had a bit of trouble with the user interface, being left handed I had a problem with the standard layout of the screen.

Everquest is a bit more discreet with quest givers and the loots are a bit lesser in quality for solo play; the best loot comes from raids and the best of the raid loot comes from players who have spent quite a bit of time in the game. The leveling in EQ is a bit slower than WoW, but characters can be developed well past the level cap using alternate experience; there could be a VAST difference in two level 75 'toons due to the AA line of experience, where WoW has a limited number of abilities (and some of the good loots require some [a lot of] player versus player fighting, at least on the server I played).

I think the EQ player and characters may be a bit more mature, due to the fact that the game has been around a lot longer, and a greater degree of dedication may be required of the EQ player. There are fewer mid level players in EQ so there will be a slight sticking point and your ability to find a group to complete quests will be tested. Both games have guilds which will allow you associate on a regular basis with other players and hopefully find consistent groups. This will allow you to fine-tune your play style without having to adjust to someone else every few hours. "Pick up" groups can be difficult to work with in EQ as there may be different levels of development and actual game experience, but having a well-equipped and knowledgeable party member can be an excellent source of information and tactics. As you progress, you will become more desirable to get into a group with and will have people looking for someone of your caliber.

Both games are good examples of MMORPG, with WoW being the easier of the two to figure out and play right out of the box, in my opinion. Everquest has a large amount of customization available with hotkeys and chat windows that can be filtered to show you relevant information during a fight or battle plus several specific options that are handy to a veteran player.

I did find the PvP part of WoW annoying at times, there are different factions that are at "war", and depending on your server, you may be attacked outright or just have someone following you around and taunting you because they are fairly certain they can take you out. I found this mostly in the "neutral" cities where some "griefers" would linger about to do a bit of "honor farming", killing you for honor, which can earn them upgrades to equipment. If causing a bit of havoc to people is your thing, try to get into a dedicated PvP server. I did find a few "enemy" players that were fun to play with, you cannot assist them by healing them, but can fight or cast a spell on the target they are fighting, thereby helping them somewhat. This does not occur very often, in my experience.

Well, hope this bit of information helped, these are the only games I've tried from this genre, so I am a bit biased toward them, and EQ is my favored of the two.

Runescape. The free version is good and will get you started, if you decide to go with a member's account it is only $5 a month and there are tons more stuff to do. It is one of the best entertainment values you will find (in my opinion).
