kewl! love it.... running "joke" ongoing clues as to where..... and yet? 20 years later...... lol.... same question bugs us all.....

The Simpsons is set in the fictional American city of Springfield. The state in which it is located has never been made clear, and it is not actually intended to exist in any specific state. Nevertheless, throughout the show's history, fans have tried to determine where Springfield is by taking the town's characteristics, surrounding geography and nearby landmarks as clues. As a response, the show has become intentionally deceptive about the state, and nearly every state and region in the U.S. has been both suggested and ruled out by conflicting evidence. Only once, in the season 11 episode "Behind the Laughter", the Simpsons are described as a “northern Kentucky family”, but since there are many counterexamples contradicting this statement in other episodes, this could just be seen as a teaser from the writers at the increasing curiosity of the fans. Groening has stated that Springfield has much in common with Portland, Oregon, the city he grew up in, and the name "Springfield" was chosen because it is a common city name, appearing in more than thirty states. The geography of Springfield and its surroundings is seen to be flexible and has been shown to contain coastlines, deserts, vast farmland, and tall mountains, or whatever a story or joke requires.

hello,
read thru the other answers and thought I should maybe add a thing or two?
okay there is one answer, MRJOH2001, you name "all 4" states that have a springfield..... ummm..
there are 71 springfields in the US
you had not named any of the ones I have lived near.... so, I went looking again....

I found an entire site on "Springfield" from the Simpsons... look at bottom for a link to the site.... here is info from it;

The short answer is that Springfield does not exist. It doesn't have a real state, and the fact that it has no state is nothing more than a running gag. Springfield is more like "Anytown, USA". It's as if all of America was compressed into a single town, or a single state. Springfield is everywhere and nowhere.

Proof? No state's capital city is called "Capital City". No state has ever had this flag. No state's motto is "Not just another state". And that's just the tip of the iceberg. There is an enormous number of geographical contradictions between episodes which make it impossible for Springfield to actually exist in any real American state.

The Portland, Oregon connection

Matt Groening grew up in Portland, Oregon, and much of Springfield and The Simpsons can be linked to various parts of this city. SNPP.com has a separate page on this.

Real Springfields

There are an enormous number of real Springfields; this is intentional. Rohit Gupta writes, "I'm from Springfield, Illinois, and one of the local papers recently had an interview with Matt Groening. In it he was asked about 'Springfield' and he replied that he chose it because it is one of the most common city names." Springfield isn't the most common city name in America; Fairview beats it, with 275 Fairviews in 42 states (and Puerto Rico), but Springfields do indeed exist in almost every American state. As our source of data we use the United States Geographical Survey search engine, which according to Andrew Gill, returned the following 71 Springfields in 36 states and possessions:

Springfield, Alabama x4
Springfield, Arkansas x2
Springfield, California
Springfield, Colorado
Springfield, Florida x2
Springfield, Georgia x9
Springfield, Idaho
Springfield, Iowa
Springfield, Illinois
Springfield, Indiana x2
Springfield, Kentucky
Springfield, Louisiana
Springfield, Massachusetts
Springfield, Maryland x4
Springfield, Maine
Springfield, Michigan x2
Springfield, Minnesota
Springfield, Missouri
Springfield, Mississippi
Springfield, North Carolina x4
Springfield, Nebraska
Springfield, New Hampshire
Springfield, New Jersey x2
Springfield, New York
Springfield, Ohio
Springfield, Oregon
Springfield, Pennsylvania x2
Springfield, South Carolina x3
Springfield, South Dakota
Springfield, Tennessee x2
Springfield, Texas x3
Springfield, Virginia x8
Springfield, Virgin Islands
Springfield, Vermont
Springfield, Wisconsin
Springfield, West Virginia

Paul Nelson writes, "Springfield, Oregon is dominated by a single employer, Weyerhaeuser (a pressboard plant), known for its air pollution and indifference to the community. It has a number of naively humorous shop and business names in its rundown downtown area, some of which creep into the show."

It should be mentioned again here, of course, that none of these literally are the fictional Springfield.

Lol that is one of the greatnesses of the show. You can make it out for yourself to where they re from. They can be from practically in state. Based on the quotes and the situations from the episodes, you can deduce it to a few states. For example, they have all four seasons, so it s not somewhere in the Southern region. In one of the episodes, Bart and his friends go on a road trip to Tennessee, so it s not there. In one of the episodes chief wiggim says, something in the context of, "send em to Michigan", so it s not in Michigan. The Simpsons travel to New York in one of the episodes, so it s probably not there. And you got to remember, there are mountains, an ocean, a downtown, so in has to be somewhere with these land forms. New Jersey would make sense. However, the Creator of the show is from Oregon, which would make ever more sense.
