I work at a public school in New York and the day for our students starts at 7:50 AM, homeroom from 8 to 8:05, then classes until 2:50 pm. 40 minutes for lunch. Each period is 40 minutes for junior high, 80 minutes (block schedule) for grades 9-12 . Different schools have different time schedules. For example, the high school in a neighboring town lets their students out at 2:30 PM, but I think they start earlier, too.
