Is it a saltwater or freshwater setup???

Well it does need to go through the cycling process. Best if you only have a couple fish to start with to get the cycle going. But the fastest way to do it is ask the fishstore (or a freind who has fish) if you can have a bag of "dirty water". Meaning the gravel-syphoned water from an established fish tank. MAKE SURE IT IS A HEALTHY FISH TANK!!!!!!!!
Then take the bag of dirty water and dump it in your tank.
It already has the GOOD BACTERIAS in it that will eat the ammonia and bad chemicals.
Does that make sense? If you dont understand, you're welcome to email me and I'll try to explain better.

Ah, a fish question in reptiles.. New tank syndrome is usually caused by too many fish installed into a new aquarium. The easiest way to start new is set the aquarium up and let it stabilize to room temperature for a day and then add a few fish, 2 or 3. Most people buy the fish and then set up the aquarium... you can purchase products that have the ammonia and nitrate eating bacteria, ask at your pet supplier.
