Get an Apple AirPort (the one that looks like a dome, not the one in the shape of a brick -- that's the AirPort Extreme). It has an inlet for your phone connection and you can set up with dial-up and get a whooping 54Mbps, which is not bad at all. It should give you a range of at least 30ft with pretty much a strong signal.
At any rate, with dial-up you're pretty limited as far as bandwidth goes, but if that's all you've been provided with, you should do fine. I recommend getting the internet via cable modem, though, or if anything, asking your phone service provider if they offer DSL.
Cheers!

I hate to tell you this, but dial-up does not support a wireless connection. You must have a cable, dsl, or satilite modem in order to attach a Router and use Wireless Adapter(s) to configure a wireless connection.
If you currenlty only have the single option of a dial-up connection in the area you reside, you will have to watch the local ISPs and see when one of them finally provide the alternate, and faster broadband connection. A broadband connection can be dsl, cable, or satilite, but not dial-up. Dial-up is simply much too slow to support a wireless connection. A wired connection is still faster than wireless too, but when using a laptop a wireless connection at home is really handy to have as you are not fixed in place by wires. Plus, having a broadband connection is just so much more fun due to how fast it is with browsing, uploading and downloading files, and sharing data across a network.
So, if it is true you only currently have dial-up as the only option then that is simply too bad. I had a really nice dsl connection when living in CA and then moved to a different residence in the same area. I asked the ISP if there was service in that area and they told me yes, so I went ahead and had it tranfered to my new address,, along with my phone service. However, when I went to hook it up, I couldn't get it to work. When I called the technical department for help, thinking I was just doing something wrong, (I was very new to computers at that time) I was told that while they had service in my new area it was only accesable via dial-up. So, I plugged it into the wall and got online. However, going from a fast broadband connection to a much slower dial-up was shocking! It took so long to load pages once taking a few short seconds, sometimes up to five minutes to load into the browser! That is not browsing, it is crawling! I was so dissapointed I started calling every ISP in my area and none of them provided broadband. However, the neighbors accross the street had broadband!! I found out that, oddly enough, a neighborhood can have broadband on one side of the street and not the other! Wow! Something to do with the wires or stations or whatever, but it was a huge let down after using broadband.
I now have broadband; know much more about how it all works, and have set up several wireless networks. I hope you are able to get broadband soon. You might wish to check into satilite connection opportunities in your area. It is an option for people who live in areas where broadband has yet to be setup. It has an expesive startup bill, the equipment you have to purchase and all, and is a bit slower than broadband as it has to go all the way to the satilite station in space, then to your destination, then back to the satilite station where it is relayed back to your computer. So, it is slower, but still much faster than dial-up. If you can afford the start up expenses of the equipment purchase requirements then it could be a viable option for you. Otherwise you will just have to keep checking with local ISPs and see when one finally offers broadband in your area or section of the block.
Good luck and have a great day!

This is what you would need.
1) A computer that has a modem to connect to the phone line and a empty ethernet port.
2) A wireless Access Point
3) A built in wireless adapter or a Cardbus Adapter for your laptop.
That is all the equipment you would need. The computer connected to dialup would have to always be on and always connected to the net, when ever you wanted to use the internet on your laptop that is.
On the computer connected to the phone line you would have to enable ICS(Internet Connection Sharing).

None of the above!
I assume you might have a Cellular phone as well? If you do go to a wirless store and get a data cable for it. Then you have a "modem" for your laptop. If you can already dial up your ISP from your laptop you should be able to use the new modem with the settings (phone number, user name and passwords) from the old "wired" modem. You might have to fiddle with the settings a little, but if you have a remotely modern cel phone IT WILL WORK and best of all you can take it to the park if you like. Email me for more details

some laptops have a small button that turns the prompt on and rancid.. examine for this and make certain that's became on. this can be an straightforward mistake. The button is often imprecise and problematical to discover.. on HP laptops that's often the color of the encircling case. There can also be a shortcut key mix that replaced into hit which will turn it off. oftentimes function+F2 or some thing... If this isn't it there may nicely be a application or hardware failure.

What you could do is get an external modem that connects to your PC's via ethernet, then put in a wireless router to connect to that, and then have your laptop connect to the wireless router. Not certain how it would affect your Land phone line though.

You can't have a wireless connection with dial-up internet yet. It's a new invention, and they're still working on it.
