My sister was pressured into signing a 3-year contract with Gold's Gym even though she knew she was going to be moving. She got a lot of false promises from the person who signed her up, saying that she would only have to pay $50 to cancel, etc. etc. She can cancel if she moves further than 25 miles away from a Gold's Gym, but she isn't. Are there ways to get around this and cancel for good?

These gym memberships are a scam. NEVER sign up for an annual contract. Best advise for anyone wanting to join, pay the initiation fees(apprx $100) and then do a monthly with option to cancel and automatic checking deduction is ok. LA Fitness has best offer I believe when it comes to this. They can even freeze membership if you don't want to cancel and resume upon your return to the gym. There are few other Fitness Clubs that offer this HOWEVER BEWARE of tactics from mainly Golds and Bally's US Swim & Fitness. They're out to screw you!! As for your sister, the unpaid amount including the remaining contractual obligated(promised balance) will be sent to their collection and eventually show up as a Negative on her credit report for 7 years and then some. After a few years the creditor sells her account to someone else who will make offers to reduce the debt usually 50%.(first the initialled unpaid debt is jacked up few thousand $$$$$), not forgetting the credit report will carry another 7 yrs by the new creditor who will sell in a few years to somebody else.(although after the actual seven years who can have the negative removed by filing with the Credit Bureau. Now does your sister want to have to go thru all this. My recommendation is that she pay her account to date(to which she was actually using the gym) only. Upon moving to a new address, if she can have all her bills mailed to a family member living outside the 25 mil range and provide that to olds coporate as your proof of residence and that it is too far for you to use the gym daily so you want to cancel. Thats what I did! Basically you have to create a new residence and a family member or friend's address that is farthest from the gym is best to use. They may require a lease so you can download lease agreements online and fill out imaginary information and fake signitures etc to show proof. If you can provide proof that you're more than 25 miles away and continue to pestor(even threaten to call a lawyer), they should cancel the agreement. I went thru the trouble of doing all these and producing all the fake information to get out of it. It may seem dishonest etc etc however why should we the consumer NOT be able to srew these guys anyways. I PROMISE YOU THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN UNFORTUNATE ENOUGH TO HAVE FALLEN INTO THIS TRAP AND NEVER BOTHERED TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT! It may seem like a hassle, but its not worth the everlasting negative record trial created if nothing is done right now. These idiots don't care about you or your situation. My fiance and I were victims however I did whayt I telling you and she didn't. She got the short end of the stick and still carries the scars from being screwd and not doing anything about it. Remember you're paying for a service that is no longer needed so tell your sis to hassle them continually. Good Luck
