I think I know the answer, but my husband said it was a dumb idea so I wanted to see if you can give me articles or links so I can show him it is. I know anybody can make a deposit to any account but only account holders can make withdrawals. Did I really make a dumb decision?

If the person you gave the number to was someone you know and they were making a deposit for you, then you are probably okay.

Your bank account number is on every check you write and you write checks to people all the time at stores, to pay bills, etc. So you should be safe.

However, I would not give your account number out to total strangers that claim they're depositing money. There are just too many scams out there and heaven only knows what schemes they've come up with now.

Agreeing with Faye as well. Account numbers are on your checks. I have worked for a Bank for 10 years. Just use common sense as far as WHO you have making your deposits for you and don't give out account information to someone you do not know.

If you have given your bank account number to ANYONE except an employer for the purposes of direct deposit, or a reputable firm that will direct deposit something like a tax refund, close your account NOW and open a new one. I have worked at banks all my life; with the advent of computers, it is incredibly easy for creeps to get money out of your account and be gone before you can turn around.

Contact your bank; they should be able to assist you with the process.

Yeah, your husband's right. Giving your account # out is not the best idea if you want to keep your money safe, what with identity theft, and computer fraud. What were you thinking?
